Academics

What We Do

Lighthouse Academy for Dyslexia is an accredited special purpose school for students whose primary learning disability is dyslexia.  Our school offers an immersive academic coursework for dyslexic students. Each day students receive two hours of therapy and language instruction, catered to their educational needs. The complete comprehensive Orton-Gillingham based curriculum takes three full years to complete. The goal of the program is to remediate the specific learning disability of dyslexia to the degree that students are able to return to the traditional school environment of their choice.

Our Program

The program has been developed to address the needs of high potential students.  Due to the academic demands of the Orton-Gillingham based curriculum, students with severe receptive or expressive language disorders, severe behavioral disorders, or students with below average intelligence are not admitted to the school. A comprehensive Psycho-educational evaluation that reveals a diagnosis of dyslexia is required before acceptance into the school can be determined.

Benefits & Credentials

Lighthouse Academy for Dyslexia maintains a low student/teacher ratio.  All dyslexia therapists hold a current teaching license through the Mississippi Department of Education and are licensed dyslexia therapists.  All therapists are trained in Orton-Gillingham based instruction as required by Mississippi Law MS (Code Sec. 37- 173-1).

The specialized reading curriculum is designed to meet the unique learning needs of the dyslexic student through provisions of instruction in the domains of language (Phonology, Pragmatics, Orthography, Semantics, Syntax, and Morphology).  The National Reading Panel’s five components of reading (Comprehension, Phonics, Phonemic Awareness, Fluency, and Vocabulary) are integrated into therapy sessions, language arts classes, and other subjects, through materials created by the nationally accredited Neuhaus Education Center.  These materials include; Basic Language Skills, Scientific Spelling, Developing Metacognitive Skills, Multi-sensory Grammar, and Word Detective.

Other School Courses

The math curriculum and study units for science and social studies meet the objectives as stated in the Mississippi Frameworks.  Field trips and other educational experiences are also provided for the students.
