Admissions
Admissions Policies
Lighthouse Academy for Dyslexia is a nonpublic special purpose school committed to serving young students with dyslexia through the implementation of a three to four year program.
Evaluation Policy
According to Mississippi law, academic evaluations may be administered by a psychometrist, psychologist, or speech language pathologist. In order to be considered for admittance to Lighthouse Academy for Dyslexia, the following test scores are required and must have been administered. Please be sure that any outside testing includes scores from these evaluation instruments:
Full Scale IQ
Academic Achievement
Phonological Processing
Reading
Language
Rapid Naming
Written Expression
If problems outside of our areas of expertise are indicated, we will make recommendations for further evaluation by an appropriately qualified professional.
Other Requirements
In addition to academic testing, the following may be required:
ADHD/ADD Evaluation Report: ADHD/ADD is commonly associated with dyslexia and is a barrier to successful remediation.
Students with ADHD/ADD must be under a physician’s care for ADHD/ADD management and taking the prescribed medicines as indicated.
A letter of recommendation from the previous teacher stating behavioral observations in the classroom.
Submission of any available emotional or behavioral documentation that will provide insight into the student’s learning needs.
A primary diagnosis of dyslexia determined by a qualified diagnostician.
The Lighthouse Academy for Dyslexia Diagnostic Center
Lighthouse Academy for Dyslexia has an on-site diagnostic center that provides testing for students. Testing at Lighthouse Academy is generally administered in one day and includes all testing required for admission to the school. Testing must reveal a primary diagnosis of dyslexia in order to be a candidate for the school.
Lighthouse Academy’s Diagnostician is Emily Wielgosz, M.S., CCC-SLP.
The Mississippi Department of Education requires that final reports containing the diagnosis of dyslexia be signed by a diagnostician to apply for scholarship assistance. To learn more about scholarships & tuition assistance, click HERE.
Testing submitted from outside of Lighthouse Academy must include all measurements stated above and must be reviewed by Mrs. Wielgosz to determine eligibility. If testing is incomplete, Lighthouse Academy will administer any needed instruments at an additional fee.
The CTOPP must be current (within the last calendar year). Lighthouse Academy will administer a current CTOPP if needed at an additional fee.
If a student is coming from a homeschooled or virtual testing environment, Lighthouse Academy may require academic testing. (State testing will not qualify for this requirement since we will not be able to see a child’s cumulative file until after admissions.)
